Thousands of years ago, Lac Long Quan (King of Lac’s land) had superhuman strength and loved to stay near water. He succeeded in the throne of his father and governed Lac-Viet tribe. De Lai (King of a Northern tribe) with his daughter – Au Co made a trip to visit Lac’s land.

De Lai admired Lac Long Quan’s talent so he brought his daughter marring with Lac Long Quan. After that, Au Co became pregnant and gave birth to a membranous sac. This sac was larger and larger and burst on the seventh day. It is surprised that there were one hundred eggs in the sac, which hatched into one hundred strong babies. Norh Vietnam tours packages

Children of Lac Long Quan and Au Co were the ancestors of Vietnamese people known as “Dragon and Fairy descendants”. The eldest son of them went with his mother to establish his own land at Phong Chau, the southern part of Phu Tho Province nowadays and be the king. That was Hung King I with 50 tribes. Then 18 Hung Kings ruled the country from 2879 to 258 BC.

The regime of Hung Kings was an outstanding and brilliant beginning for establishing Vietnam as a sovereign nation. Eighteen generations of Hung Kings developed the nation by mutual affection, community awareness, patriotism and unwillingness to oppression. From generations to generations, Vietnamese people hold this nationwide festival as a special destination on the tenth day of the third month in lunar calendar for the residents to celebrate the anniversary of their ancestors’ death, founders of Vietnamese nation.

Moreover, the residents would serve “banh chung” and “banh day” in the tenth day of the third lunar month to remind our citizens of Lang Lieu legend who invented these cakes and the merit of Hung Kings teaching Vietnamese people to grow rice. In addition, a Xoan song performance, “Ca Tru” – Vietnamese traditional music and other activities such as rice cooking, dragon dancing would be organized during this event.
